SMS Contact Lists

Contact lists let you organize phone numbers for bulk SMS campaigns. Create a list once, add contacts manually or import from CSV, then reuse the list whenever you send templated messages. You can also share lists with team members for collaborative campaigns.

Why Use Contact Lists

  • Reusable — Create a list for a campaign, event, or customer segment and use it repeatedly
  • Organized — Group contacts by department, region, campaign, or any other criteria
  • Efficient — Import hundreds of contacts from a CSV in one action
  • Collaborative — Share lists with colleagues so the whole team can send to the same audience

Creating a Contact List

Go to SMS > Contact Lists tab — Open the SMS module and select the Contact Lists tab.

Click "New List" — Start creating a new contact list.

Name the list — Enter a descriptive name (e.g., "Q1 Marketing Campaign", "West Coast Customers"). Click Create to save.

Adding Contacts

Manual Entry

  1. Open the contact list
  2. Click Add Contact or Add manually
  3. Enter the phone number (E.164 format recommended, e.g., +15551234567)
  4. Optionally add contact metadata: name, first name, company, etc. (useful for template variables)
  5. Save the contact
  6. Repeat for additional contacts

Import from CSV

  1. Open the contact list
  2. Click Import or Import from CSV
  3. Select your CSV file
  4. Map columns — Ensure your CSV has a column for phone numbers; map it to the correct field
  5. If your CSV includes columns like first_name, company, etc., map those for template variable support
  6. Click Import to add all contacts to the list

CSV columns such as first_name, last_name, company, and phone can be used as template variables when sending messages. Map them correctly during import.

Sharing Lists with Team Members

  1. Open the contact list
  2. Go to Share or Permissions
  3. Search for and select team members you want to share with
  4. Save

Shared users can view the list and use it when sending templates. They cannot modify the list unless you grant edit permissions (if available).

Using Lists with Templates

When sending a template:

  1. Go to SMS > Templates
  2. Click the Send button on the template you want to use
  3. Choose Contact list as the recipient type
  4. Select your contact list
  5. Variables in the template (e.g., {{first_name}}) are auto-filled from each contact's data
  6. Confirm and send

Each contact in the list receives a personalized message based on their stored data.

Best Practices

  • Use E.164 format+1 for US/Canada, country code + number for international
  • Include metadata — Add first name, company, etc. for better template personalization
  • Name lists clearly — Use names that indicate purpose (e.g., "Support - Tier 1") for easy identification
  • Audit periodically — Remove opted-out or invalid numbers to maintain list quality
