Audio and Video Calls from Chat
Start audio or video calls from 1:1 or group chats. WebRTC-based, works in browser. Mute, toggle camera, end call.
Audio and Video Calls from Chat
You can start audio or video calls directly from any chat—whether it's a direct message or a group conversation. No extra software is required; calls run in your browser via WebRTC.
Starting a Call
From a 1:1 Chat
In a direct message conversation:
- Audio call — Click the phone icon in the chat header. A one-on-one audio call starts with that person.
- Video call — Click the camera icon in the chat header. A one-on-one video call starts.
The other person receives an incoming call notification and can accept or decline.
From a Group Chat
In a group conversation:
- Audio call — Click the phone icon to start a group audio call. All members can join.
- Video call — Click the camera icon to start a group video call. All members can join with their cameras and microphones.
Group members receive an invitation and can join from the call notification or the chat header.
Call Controls
During a call, you’ll see controls to manage your participation:
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| Mute / Unmute | Turn your microphone on or off. When muted, others cannot hear you. |
| Camera toggle | Turn your video on or off. When off, others see a placeholder or your avatar. |
| End call | Hang up and leave the call. In group calls, others continue; in 1:1, the call ends for both. |
Enable your microphone and camera when the browser prompts for permissions. If you block access, you won’t be able to send audio or video.
WebRTC and Browser Support
Calls use WebRTC and run in:
- Chrome
- Firefox
- Edge
- Safari
Ensure your browser is up to date. Some corporate networks or firewalls may restrict WebRTC; check with your IT team if calls fail to connect.
In-Call Experience
- 1:1 calls — Full-screen or picture-in-picture view of the other person. Your own video may appear in a small preview.
- Group calls — Multiple participants appear in a grid or layout. You can focus on specific participants or see everyone at once.
Quality depends on your network. A stable internet connection improves audio and video.
If you experience poor quality, try closing other bandwidth-heavy applications or switching to audio-only to reduce load.
