SMS Contact Tags

Tags help you categorize and organize your SMS contacts and contact list entries. Create tags for customer segments, campaign groups, geographic regions, or any classification that helps you manage your audience.

Overview

Tags are color-coded labels you can assign to contacts. They work across the SMS module — you can tag contacts in your general contact directory and in SMS contact list entries.

  • Filtering — Quickly find contacts by tag when composing messages or managing lists
  • Segmentation — Use tags to build targeted audiences for campaigns

Managing Tags

Creating a Tag

Open the Tags tab — In the SMS module, switch to the Tags tab.

Click "New Tag" — Start creating a new tag.

Name the tag — Enter a descriptive name (e.g., "Premium Customer", "Newsletter Subscriber").

Choose a color — Select a color for the tag badge. Colors help differentiate tags visually.

Save — The tag is created and available for assignment.

Editing a Tag

  1. In the Tags tab, find the tag you want to edit
  2. Click the edit button
  3. Change the name or color
  4. Save — all contacts with this tag are updated automatically

Deleting a Tag

  1. Click the delete button on the tag
  2. Confirm the deletion
  3. The tag is removed from all contacts that had it assigned

Deleting a tag removes it from all contacts. This cannot be undone.

Assigning Tags to Contacts

From the Tags Tab

  1. Open the Tags tab
  2. Click on a tag to view its details
  3. Click Assign Contacts
  4. Search for contacts and select them
  5. Save — the selected contacts now carry this tag

From Contact List Entries

When viewing a contact list entry in the Contact Lists tab:

  1. Open a contact list and select an entry
  2. Use the Tag Picker to add or remove tags
  3. Tags are saved immediately

Searching by Tag

In the Tags tab, use the search bar to filter tags by name. This is helpful when you have many tags and need to find a specific one quickly.

Best Practices

  • Be consistent — Establish naming conventions (e.g., always use "Region: West Coast" format for geographic tags)
  • Use colors meaningfully — Assign similar colors to related tags (e.g., all campaign tags in blue, all region tags in green)
  • Keep tags manageable — Too many tags become hard to maintain; merge or archive unused ones periodically
  • Combine with contact lists — Use tags alongside contact lists for flexible audience targeting
